Recognizing this, Vail Resorts has announced a pay bump for their non-union ski patrol staff working in certain high-risk areas.
With the hazardous nature of the terrain at places like Beaver Creek, Colorado, and Grand Targhee, Wyoming, acting President of Vail Resorts, Greg Sullivan, decided it was time these alpine heroes received a fair shake— and a fatter paycheck. As ski areas get busier and climate conditions become more unpredictable, the importance of skilled patrollers has skyrocketed.
Why the Raise Now?
It's no secret that patrollers are often first on the scene during avalanches, and they certainly carry more than their weight (and first-aid kits). According to industry data, the number of rescues in ski regions has increased by 15% over the past five years. Providing the first line of defense in remote areas requires that these patrollers remain as steadfast as the mountain slopes they guard.
Historically, ski patrol has been one of those "love of the gig" jobs, where passion for the powder often outweighs the pay. But with the added pressures and responsibilities heightened by climate variances, Vail's decision acknowledges the mental and physical toll the patrollers endure. Plus, it's a strategic move to retain talent amidst ongoing staffing difficulties, a challenge faced across the winter sports industry.
Sullivan remarked, [the pay increase] "demonstrates our commitment to the safety of both our guests and employees— a priority that cannot have a price tag."
